Caring For Your Home Theater Speakers

We all know how great a difference the quality of your speakers make when watching movies or simply listening to music. They bring everything to life and without doubt are the center of every body's home theater systems. If you possess Acoustimass speakers or prefer wireless surround speakers, there are some basic things you can do to make your speakers last and keep their sound quality:
1. Clean them on a regular basis- don't use liquid cleaners as they may wet the components and cause damage
2. Keep them in a dust-free place- dust greatly affects speakers performance. To clean dust, use a vacuum or blower.
3. Keep magnets away- keep them in wooden or plastic containers, not on anything metal that can act as a conductor. This will damage the built-in electromagnet.
4. Keep materials that can cause static electricity away- static electricity is a big hazard for speakers. To maintain the best home theater speakers, use anti-static floor mats and refrain from carpets.
5. Keep your speakers away from heat-direct heat especially from the sun can affect performance. Make sure there is sufficient ventilation and the speakers are away from direct sunlight.
6. Follow the instruction manual- even the cheapest surround system speakers have very detailed manuals to lengthen the speakers life.
7. Keep an uninterrupted power supply- powered speakers are very susceptible to power surges. Always keep your speakers plugged on a surge protector.
8. Conduct a 'burn out' - keep your newly purchased speakers running for 24 hours. Any manufacturing defects will be clear after this period.
9. Check your wiring- make sure you get the proper plugging procedure to avoid any short circuits.
10. Be observant- if you notice any changes in sound, immediately take it to the repair shop. Don't try to fix anything on your own or you might make the problem worse.
Don't make these mistakes!
All the great maintenance tips wouldn't be of any use if you buy the wrong kind of speaker in the first place. Below are some of the mistakes consumers make when purchasing their home theater speakers:
* Getting the wrong kind of speaker: You always have to consider the kind of room you plan to place your speakers or you might have speakers that are way too strong for room or quite weak. To determine the kind of speakers you need in relation to your room, measure your room first before buying.
* Looking at the Price not Cost- what's the difference? Cost is long term whereas price is the amount you purchase the speaker for. Many who settle for cheap home theater speakers find themselves having to buy a new one after a couple of months.
* Not listening before purchasing- most times people simply look at the size, style and price then buy. To make sure you're getting good quality, always ask for the speakers to be tried.
